Description
Florence Wical recalls her life story growing up around California in the Seventh Day Adventist community in the early 1900s. She recounts how her family arrived in San Bernardino in the late 1800s and what San Bernardino and Loma Linda were like. Over the course of her life, she frequently moved to Escondido, San Diego, St Helena, Angwin, and other locations in California but always returned to Loma Linda. Much of the travel revolved around her schooling as she attended many different schools including La Sierra and Pacific Union College for higher education. She recalls historical events such as the 1915 flood as well as church events such as the annual campmeeting.
The recorded oral history includes two duplicate pages. The first, page 3 is a redacted version of the original story. When Hazel June Church typed Florence's memoir in 1995 she originally censored the racially offensive language in the story. On page 3A the original language, used by the Loma Linda nurse and subsequently recounted by Florence, is represented. The use of this racial slur displays widely held racial attitudes in the early 20th century.
